Privacy Policy

Last Updated: October 23, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how your information is handled when you use the Nostr Vault apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, the web app at nostrvault.app/vault/, and the nostrvault.app website. Nostr Vault is a Nostr client with a Nostr relay (your "vault") built in. It is made by btcforplebs ("we").

1. What We Run and What It Keeps

The apps have no analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking code, and no push notification server: notifications are made on your device. We do not build profiles of people, score them or index anyone who doesn't use the app. Two things we run do receive data, and one copy of the website runs elsewhere:

2. The Nostr Network

When you publish notes, update your profile, react, zap or send messages, the App signs that data with your key and sends it to your relays. Notes, profiles, follows and reactions are public. Direct messages are encrypted, but relays can see who sent them, to whom and when. Anyone can copy what a public relay holds, and a relay may keep it after you delete it.

3. Services the Apps Contact on Their Own

To show your feed, the apps connect to other people's servers. Each of them sees your IP address, like any website does.

4. Lookups You Turn On

These send a request signed by your key, so the service can tie it to your account. Both are off unless you turn them on in Settings → Privacy.

5. Things You Do

These only happen when you use them, and the service sees what you send it: search (search.nos.today, nostr.wine, relay.vertexlab.io and nostrver.se get the text you type), GIF search (gifs.nostr.build), your wallet (Nostr Wallet Connect relay, Lightning payments and, for the on-chain wallet, mempool.space), media uploads (your Blossom servers; new accounts start with blossom.nostr.build and Primal), remote signers (NIP-46, through relay.powr.build or the relay you choose), NIP-05 checks during setup, and backups to storage you set up.

6. On Your Device

Your vault relay, your notes, messages, drafts and media cache are kept on your device. In the apps, your private key is kept in the device's Keychain (iPhone and Mac) or encrypted app storage (Android), or stays in your remote signer or Amber.

7. The Web App

The web app at nostrvault.app/vault/ runs in your browser. Its relay, your notes, messages and drafts, a bunker connection (stored encrypted), your wallet connection (stored encrypted), the page's device key and the browser's own FIPS mesh key are kept in that browser's storage on your device. If you sign in with a browser extension or bunker, the web app never holds your Nostr secret key: the extension or bunker does. If you create an account in the web app, its secret key is made in your browser and kept in that browser's storage, encrypted with the password you choose (NIP-49) and with a key the browser keeps for this site; it is never sent to us or anyone else. The browser may delete this storage too (Safari does after 7 days without a visit), and then only the copy of your secret key you saved can get the account back, in a Nostr browser extension or in the Nostr Vault app (the web app does not take a secret key).

Creating an account publishes your relay list, the relays you take messages on, the name and photo you enter (the photo goes to a media server, blossom.nostr.build or blossom.primal.net) and the people you choose to follow.

Signing out deletes this account's vault, drafts and wallet connection, a secret key made in this browser, and the page's device and mesh keys. Some things stay in the browser until you clear the site's data in your browser settings: your search history, your feed and message relay choices, which posts you have seen, the list of accounts used on this browser and the page's offline copy of the app.

The web app connects to the same kinds of services as the apps (section 3), except wsrv.nl: our relay, relay.damus.io, relay.primal.net and relay.snort.social for reading and posting, purplepag.es for profiles, search.nos.today for search, Wavlake, zap.stream and zap.cooking, media hosts, link previews and zap services.

8. Reporting and Blocking

The App displays User Generated Content from the Nostr network. You can block people and filter what you see on your device. Reporting a post or a person publishes a public report (a Nostr kind 1984 event, signed by you) to your relays. It does not come to us. To tell us about abusive content, use the contacts below.
